Yamba Yabbies held meeting number 202 on April 4 with a good attendance of members and one visitor, Paul Rasmussen. Noel was Toastmaster and chose ‘birthdays’ as the theme, giving lots of dates of famous people throughout the meeting. President Joy presented Jan C with a Competent Communicator bronze award and congratulated her on receiving a Triple Crown badge presented to her at a recent conference. To receive the award, Jan completed three awards in one year. All roles were explained by Timer Jan C, Meeting Listener Annie, General Evaluator Belinda and Grammarian Micheal who gave ‘ignorant’ as word of the night. Pam called on volunteers for the ‘Soap Box’ segment. Jan C spoke on the labelling on shampoo and conditioner bottles being too small when not wearing glasses in the shower. Deyann talked on her challenges of equality of females in an organisation and Ilma spoke on the ‘Plunge’ magazine which informs us of the wonderful things taking place in the valley. This magazine is available from the library. In the speech segment, Annie spoke from Competent Communicator Manual – The Ice Breaker with speech titled ‘Sailing Through Life’, and Jeanette followed with speech from Advanced Manual – Interpretive Reading titled ‘Sapphire Skies’ by Belinda Alexander. Two excellent speeches and both speakers received good evaluations from Brendon and Joy. Noel celebrated his birthday with a ‘yummy’ cake in the break and he then commenced a ‘Round Robin’ with a small poem on resumption of the meeting. Deyann was Table Topics Master in the impromptu section and followed the theme, and the speakers Belinda, Andrew, Noel, Michael and Pam received favourable evaluations from Ilma and Andrew. It was decided to hold our Change Over on June 6 at the home of President Joy. Further information on this in the future. Meetings are held first and third Mondays of the month at Yamba Bowling Club commencing 7pm sharp. Visitors are always welcome and the meetings are half learning and half fun.
