Catherine Aitchison (pictured right) is the inaugural Queen of the Green at Yamba Women’s Bowling Club. Introduced (or perhaps re-introduced from long ago) on the initiative of Marjorie Thompson, it is a Major Singles Challenge competition. To kick start it, two of the club’s leading singles players, Cathryn and Helen Atkinson played off to see who has the honour of wearing the badge for Queen of the Green kindly donated by Patron Lyn Olsson. Catherine has become the first Queen, and will retain the badge until a challenger from the self-nominated list defeats her, and so it will be passed on. A Princess of the Green for a Minor Singles Challenge run in exactly the same way had also been introduced, but play is yet to get underway. Wendy Ballantyne
