Two interesting match ups in the semi finals at YWBC on Thursday 13th resulted in contrasting wins for Bev Shatte and Ros Dickson. Bev got off to a good start in her game against the more experienced Pam Conley, to lead 8-3 on 7, and continued through a series of close heads to push this out to 17-7 until Pam halved the lead with a 4 and a single on the next two ends. Bev steadied to lead 21-12 but Pam tenaciously fought back again and over the next three ends was threatening to surge on when she reduced the gap to just 3 shots, at 21-18. Not to be denied, though, Bev toughed it out, regained her form and went on to win 25-19 to reach her first final. In the other semi, Ros Dickson led most of the way against rookie Cheryl Deveny, competing in her first important Club Competition. This game was tight early with Cheryl taking the first two ends, but after Ros squared it up at 3 all on 3, and from there pushed on to retain the advantage all the way. Eventually taking out the game 25-10, Ros played some delightful bowls, regularly picking up ones and twos throughout and thoroughly deserved her win. But Cheryl demonstrated great determination in keeping the heads competitive and will benefit greatly from the experience. Ros will also be playing in her first final at our club when she and Bev do battle in the final. Originally set down for Tuesday 18th August, the final has now been postponed and the date will be advised shortly by the match Committee. The lucky winning team in social bowls on 13th was the duo of Gwen Hoskin and Beryl Evans (one of our number of regular visitors) who had a win over Ros Hippisley and Judy Abbott. Ann Gulliver, who recently returned to bowls, also returned to the winners circle when she teamed with D Budd to take out the Runners Up lucky rink prize, defeating Flo Stevens and M Pegg.
