Yamba Rotary – Interact Group of Maclean High

On Sunday 1st November, students from the Maclean High and Interact Group of (Yamba Rotary) who are also members of the Maclean High, joined forces to enter into the Jacaranda Dragon Boat races. The crew members were Sam Brandon, Alyssa Cassidy, Angus Cassidy, Nicole Cowling, Maneesha Davis, Georgie Dobbin, Lachlan Fisher, Eryn Hammond, Mitchell Johns, Ethan Johnson, Kirrily Maxwell, Mrs Pettet, Luke Plummer, Holly Rolfe, Alexandra Rose, Elizabeth Rose, Mrs Sutton, Kyle Trevethick and Miss Werry. All members had a fantastic day! The first heat was at 9am, and it was a great race to finish in a strong third place in a time of 69.68 seconds over a 200 metre distance. The second heat, everyone got into the right rhythm bringing the time down to 65.17 seconds, finishing in third place. With the wonderful support of the Clarence Coast Dragon Boat ladies, the crew started to incorporate a few racing tactics to improve the start of the race. With encouragement from Chris (sweep) and Jan (drummer) the crew achieved an exciting second place in the third heat, with best time of 56.5 seconds. In the finals, the team were racing against army cadets and the CVAC. Their effort was fantastic as they had not paddled before, the team displayed excellent sportsmanship and teamwork. Once again, a big thank-you goes out to all concerned for the marvellous comradeship and teamwork.
