Yamba Men’s Mixed Pairs final this coming Saturday

Next Saturday, 23rd July, will feature a huge day of bowls on the superbly prepared greens of the Yamba Bowling and Recreation Club. The morning session, commencing at 9am, will feature the final of the Mixed Pairs Championship where the skilled combination of Marjorie Thompson and Peter Forrester will endeavour to overcome the determined duo of Denise Burey and Graham Meany in what should be a highlight of the club’s annual mixed championship events. Also on the program for the morning are the semi-finals of the club’s Major/Minor Pairs Championship which will feature the ever improving Keith Smith and last Year’s Bowler of the Year, Martyn Wood, up against the reliable combination of Chris Gunning and Brad Johnson who last Sunday convincingly overcame the talented and experienced team of Ron Moore and Steve Kliendienst in their postponed quarter-final by 25 – 9. The second semi-final will see Erik Pedder and Mark Scobie pitting their collective skills against championship surprise packets, John Luchetti and Tom Morrow. Finally, to ensure the morning session of bowls has something for everyone, round three of the Minor Singles Championship will also be staged with sixteen bowlers still in contention for this keenly sought after title. The thrills will continue in the afternoon with the quarter-finals of the Minor Singles Championship scheduled to commence at 1pm. The first two rounds have been dominated by close contests and the emergence of a number of developing bowlers as real threats. At this stage of the competition the main contenders appear to be Col Lindsay, Steve Butler, Rod O’Brien, Cliff Hinton and the pre-championship favourite, Erik Pedder. To cap the day off, a Grafton invitational side will venture to Yamba to provide an opposed training session for the club’s Grade 3 Pennant side who will be contesting the State finals at the end of the month. The practice session is scheduled to commence at 12.45pm. The Lion’s Club Charity Bowls Day was held on Sunday 17th July with a great community response both in the number of participants and the kind generosity of the local businesses who provided an array of raffle prizes. A total of 88 participants took to the greens in ever improving weather with everyone having an enjoyable morning highlighted by the enticements and rewards for good shots. Strangely the bowls improved as the rewards took effect. Thanks again to all involved. The next Travelling Bowler’s activity is a visit by the Queensland Veterans on Saturday 20th August, followed by a reciprocal visit to Yamba by the Park Beach Pirates on Sunday 28th August. Participation sheets will be placed at the main bowl’s notice board. Social bowls continues with pairs on Wednesday and triples on Friday. All games commence at 1pm and names need to be on the respective nomination sheets by 11.30am on the day of play. All nominations are guaranteed a game and visitors are most welcomed.
