Angourie surfer Dakoda Walters fell one place short of taking out the 2017 Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp held at Duranbah Beach last week. Coffs Harbour surfer Ethan Stocks defeated Walters in tight contest for the 16 & Under Boy’s crown. Stocks, last year’s runner-up, led the chase early on, with a 9.77 (out of a possible 10.00) up his sleeve, and managed to hold off the Angourie local, despite a last minute charge from Walters, who, right on the siren, performed a combination of turns punctuated with an air reverse to complete the wave. “It feels so good to win after getting second last year,” said Stocks. “I was a bit nervous going into the final and I was just hoping I would get a few of the bigger ones. “I was a bit worried when Dakoda took off on that last wave, thinking he might get the score but you can’t do much about that.”
