Home to many of the Clarence Valley’s most precious and irreplaceable artefacts, historical items and local treasures, the Clarence River Historical Society at Schaeffer House is also home to some amazing and priceless pieces associated with World War I, World War II, and several other widely recognised battles and conflicts, and the stories behind them.

As Australians unite on Anzac Day to remember, reflect and acknowledge with dignity and gratitude, the many lives which were forever changed, and forever lost, through services to our country and the Commonwealth, the Clarence River Historical Society is encouraging people to visit their wonderful collection.

Artefacts on display include those from our nation’s participation in wars past and present.

In 2021, the Society has decided to focus on displaying artefacts and records relating specifically to WWI.

Stories and records of all kinds are held by the Society including letters home from the Western Front of WWI, gifts to soldiers and photographic collections.

Included in the collection is a beautiful frame containing several silk embroidered postcards which were sent home to loved ones from France by Australian soldiers serving in WWI.

Schaeffer House is open each Thursday between 1-4pm.

This year, they will open during the same hours on Anzac Day.

Entry is by a gold coin donation and the dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to preserve the collection for future generations are always happy to share their knowledge with visitors.

The Society has also loaned a selection of items to the Clarence Regional Library in Grafton for display there.

The Clarence River Historical Society would also like to pay their respects, especially on Anzac Day, to those who served our country.
