Yamba Women’s Bowling Club recently won the very last duel for the Em Utting Trophy in a three-way contest against Iluka and Maclean at Maclean. The trophy has been keenly contested for over 30 years in memory of this wonderful lady, a pioneer of bowls in the Lower Clarence, but it has been decided that it is time to move on, and while this particular contest will now be discontinued the magnificent trophy will be treasured. Yamba’s win was by the narrowest of margins, winning by just one shot overall from Maclean, with Iluka only five shots further back. The Yamba team of Helen Scott, Wendy Ballantyne, Monica Conlan and Chris Cole had a convincing victory over their Iluka opponents, and while Val Terry, Catherine Aitchison, Robyn McPherson and Isabel Neill went down to one of the Maclean teams, they performed well and held the score so that Yamba came out on top overall. In the other game, Maclean defeated Iluka, but could not bridge the gap for their club to keep the trophy they had won last year. The Yamba club is quietly proud to have won both this trophy and the Nell Brown shield in what has been the final year that both of these inter-club competitions will be contested, and members of all three clubs have some wonderful memories of great bowls and friendship to cherish.
