HoneyBee Hives

Tartan Brushy R.S.L. Day Club

There was a good attendance on October 11 to hear everything about bees.

These miraculous little creatures we couldn’t live without! Di McQueen gave us a very informative talk on their beehive business and by products. They supply bees to eager gardeners and are just getting back on their feet after some natural disasters. Some interesting facts were given.

Bee venom has medicinal properties and is used in medical research. Bees have five eyes, have amazing sight and sense of smell. There are female worker bees, cleaner bees, and nursing bees. They produce different coloured honey from different nectars.

Spraying clover with insecticides kills bees. Bees love weeds. Plant natives to attract Bees. Bees do not like the colour red or anything fluffy. Royal jelly is taken from the Queen before she leaves the hive to feed larvae. Honey is good for sore throats, cuts and rashes. Always check with your neighbours before acquiring bees.

Members were so interested in this talk and had fun purchasing some of the beeswax products.

The next meeting was cancelled due to power outage. At the end of October, ‘The Country Ramblers’ entertained us, and the trading table was held. We have had some sturdy chairs with armrests donated these are very much appreciated and we thank The Mem’s Shed in Townsend. The group from Yamba Uniting were with us today and they enjoyed their day.

Melbourne Cup Day arrived in their finery. Sweeps were organized thanks to Marie. The Tartan Brushy Cup was run, and a delicious lunch was enjoyed thanks to all our kitchen ladies! Members left to watch the race at home. A few volunteers stayed behind to watch it, but we waited, and nothing happened! We realized it wasn’t on the usual channel. So, we MISSED it.

Remembrance Day was held, and it was a very moving morning. ‘The Tempomentals’ entertained us with a special programme of war-time songs and readings. We conducted our own service which included the laying of wreaths and flowers LEST WE FORGET! Glad read the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ and some interesting facts on the poppy. The weeks are going fast, and we are looking forward to our Christmas lunch on December 6.
