Councillor Jim Simmons has retained his position as mayor of Clarence Valley Council (CVC), defeating Cr Karen Toms eight votes to one.

Councillor Jason Kingsley also retained his position in similar circumstances, winning the vote seven to one over Cr Greg Clancy.

Councillor Deborah Novak abstained from voting for the deputy mayor.

The vote was taken by a show of hands after Cr Richie Williamson moved a successful motion.

Past mayoral elections have been conducted in secret ballots.

The election was held in an extraordinary meeting at the Maclean chambers at 1pm, Tuesday September 22.
