Federal member for Page Kevin Hogan has announced that grant applications for Round 2 of the Government’s Safer Streets Programme have opened. “CCTV cameras and other security infrastructure makes our towns safer, can save lives, and will most certainly prevent crime. I encourage all our local councils and other organisations to apply for funding under this programme,” he said. “Our community members have a right to feel safe and secure walking down our streets whether it is day or night.” “Investment in security infrastructure at local crime hotpots will reduce the community’s fear of crime and contribute to greater community safety and resilience.” More than 50 CCTV cameras were installed in Casino’s town centre under Round 1 following an election promise by Mr Hogan. “The CCTV cameras in Casino have been welcomed by the local community and are already proving their worth,” Mr Hogan said. Round 2 of the Safer Streets Programme will invest up to $29.4 million in individual grants for local government organisations and eligible incorporated not-for-profit organisations, community groups, and chambers of commerce to implement community safety and crime prevention initiatives across Australia. “I encourage potential applicants to contact my office to discuss their projects eligibility and to receive all submission details,” Mr Hogan said. The Safer Streets Programme uses proceeds of crime – confiscated from criminals – to fund these local crime prevention projects.
