Ed, On behalf of the 2017 Lower Clarence Relay for Life Committee I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone in the Lower Clarence community who supported our Relay For Life event in Yamba on May 13 at the Yamba Public School. It was a success despite a major cancellation of our first relay date in March. The provisional amount raised so far is $71,025. This is absolutely incredible achievement for a small community. Funds raised from the relay will go toward world class cancer research, and to provide prevention, information and support services, programs and advocacy for people with cancer who live in the Clarence Valley. We are very grateful to Diana Foley, Principal of the Yamba Public School, for the use of the school’s facilities for the weekend. Rod Menzies, the school’s general assistant, was a tremendous resource and worked tirelessly with the logistics team to make sure the facilities were in top shape for the relay. We are extremely grateful for the support of our major sponsors for the Relay: 2GF/FM 104.7 Clarence Valley, Yamba Golf and Country Club, The Daily Examiner/Coastal Views, Clarence Valley Council, Clarence Valley Independent, and TLC FM 100.3. I would particularly like to mention the businesses and community organisations who donated toward the catering for the weekend: Yamba Lions Club, The Whiddon Group Maclean, Irons and Craig, Iluka IGA, The Coffee Cart, Flour + Water Woodfire Pizza, Yamba Icecreamery. A huge thank-you is extended to all the local businesses, community organisations, and individuals who so kindly donated funds and equipment, promotion and advertising, and prizes for the relay. The response was overwhelming for a population that is dealing with the many pressures on our local community. A relay is also about fun, great entertainment and activities. I would like to mention the Maclean & District Services Pipe Band, the wonderful vocalists and musicians who donated their time to the Relay. Thank-you for your support. Many thanks go to members of the local community who supported our major raffle, created teams, organised fundraising events before and during the relay. A special thank you goes to all the people who donned their walking shoes to make the 2017 relay a resounding success. It is the community support and involvement that makes events like the relay a great social event. I would particularly like to thank the Lower Clarence Relay for Life committee for their tireless efforts over the past two years to pull this event together. I would also like to thank the group of volunteers who were a significant part of the smooth running of the event. Without their time and dedication community events to raise the awareness of the fight against cancer would not be possible. Finally, but not least, I would like to thank the representatives from the Cancer Council NSW Northern Rivers for the never-ending support and guidance they provided to our committee in the lead up to the relay.
