Local Media ‘Flip’ for Golden Tongs

It’s ON!!

Amongst the sizzle and splatter of cooking sausages and frying eggs at the annual Jacaranda Thursday Breakfast (2 November), local media, the Clarence Valley Independent and 2GF will once again battle for the illustrious and most coveted of trophies, the ‘GOLDEN TONGS’.

Although only twelve months have passed since the last breakfast battle was won by the 2GF team (so they claim), the Independent staff have been undertaking a Herculean level of training. With biceps bulging, they have mastered the art of egg frying, achieving the perfect one-handed flip, wrangled with slippery sausages on hot grill plates and learned to dodge grease splatters and smoke hazards – a true test of their agility and reflexes.

Meanwhile, back in the comfort of their broadcasting station, the 2GF jocks have been resting on their laurels. Their year has been spent sitting in comfy chairs, chatting with sports stars, relaxing to their favourite songs and pushing little buttons up and down.

“Our intensive training will leave the 2GF jocks with scrambled eggs in places they shouldn’t be,” said Fran Dowsett, Sales Manager and Team Leader of the Independent crew.

Paul Covington, Manager of the 2GF radio station said the 2GF/Clarence Valley Independent Jacaranda Breakfast has been the traditional start to Jacaranda Thursday celebrations for more than 40 years. 2GF commenced broadcasting in 1933, 90 years ago, and has been involved in the annual festival since Jacaranda Festival Week started in 1934.

“With our long-standing involvement in the Jacaranda breakfast we have become Master Chefs in the art of cooking sausages and eggs and no longer need to spend gruelling hours training over hot plates like the Independent novices.

“We can’t wait to fire up the barbie to show them how to cook and serve a tasty breakfast to the hordes of early risers lining up at 6.30am on Jacaranda Thursday.

“At the end of the day, The ‘Golden Tongs’ will be once again be in their rightful place on display in the 2GF offices” said Paul.

Fran believes that even though the Independent have only been part of this tradition for 8 years, the 2GF jocks will have egg on their faces, following the Independent’s year of demanding workouts.

Local businesses have again thrown their support behind the breakfast donating goods and services to help feed the 3000 plus early morning revellers.

Sausages from Holiday Coast Meats and eggs from Mid Coast eggs will be cooked on Elgas barbecues and served on Tip Top bread from Woolworths. Farmer Lous will once again have a range of fresh fruit to sample, and it can all be washed down with Norco fresh local milk. Other businesses include Grafton Hire which has a team who arrive early to set up tables and other equipment.

From 6.30am November 2, breakfast enthusiasts can eggspect to be feasting on a plate of perfectly cooked sausages and eggs, while the battle for the Golden Tongs rages around them.

LET THE COOK OFF BEGIN!
