Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan is encouraging farmers and agricultural businesses to have their say on the Government’s proposed farm trespass laws that are now before a Senate Committee.

“Local farmers and businesses have until July 31 to make their voices heard,” he said.

“Our farmers, fishers and foresters have the right to feel safe in their businesses and their homes. They should be able to carry out their business without activists invading their homes and stealing their property.

“Our proposed laws send a clear message to animal activists – if you use personal information to incite farm trespass, you risk jail.”

A first-time offender will face 12 months imprisonment and a second-time offender, 5 years in jail.

“While state governments are responsible for laws against trespass, the Federal Government is committed in doing all within our power to protect farmers and their families,” Mr Hogan said.

Submissions to the Senate Committee can be made confidentially in writing or online. There will also be public hearings by the committee which has a report date of September 6.
