Leigh Bowers takes Iluka Minor Singles title

“Finally, the bride”, these were the words uttered by Iluka bowler Leigh Bowers shortly after she became the Minor Singles Champion for 2021.

Leigh is a successful, competent, and experienced bowler who has always been the runner up until the final played on Thursday September 23.

Leigh played Pam Ravet in a very competitive entertaining game, with both players performing some fantastic shots with some very close heads.

Pam has only recently become a full bowling member and she certainly acquitted herself extremely well with some good, thought-out shots. Throughout the game, the scores were close and both players took multiple shots. Pam was able to play some great shots to win the head regularly and improve the score from 15 to 11 against to as close as 19-16 against.

On the final end Leigh’s experience and calm manner saw her build the head with superb accuracy to have three fantastic shots. Pam did concentrate to try to break up the head, but it wasn’t to be, resulting in a win to Leigh with the score at 25-16. Both players were given a rousing round of applause to acknowledge a very entertaining game.

In the semi-finals, Janice Blaxter and Di Hadlow both put in a valiant effort in shocking conditions on a very windy and rainy day.

A championship final, particularly singles, involves many helpers. Thanks must go to Ros Duncan and Denise Prentice who helped out not only as umpires but also as controlling body and marker. Thank you to Ann McCausland and Sue Pye who were markers.

In the next month, the club has a number of events happening. Our Consistency Singles competition starts on October 5. Please get serious and nominate this week; the sheet is on the board.

The list for the Birthday Day lunch, which is on Friday October 8, is on the board. This is our chance to dress up and socialise, so please consider coming along.

The Weekly Promo draw has started and the 28th will be the 1st monthly draw for the $80 vouchers.

Finally, the Mixed Fours nomination form is up on the men’s board and is due to start on Saturday October 2

Happy bowling.
