Lawrence community invited to put best foot forward before new bridge opens

It’s official. Major work on the new $27 million Sportsmans Creek Bridge is almost complete. Clarence MP Chris Gulaptis said it’s a time to celebrate and has invited locals to a community walk before the crossing opens to traffic. “This event is the best way to thank the community for its ongoing patience while this wonderful project has progressed,” Mr Gulaptis said. “The community has watched on as this replacement bridge has been built and it’s only fair they get a chance to walk across it before it officially opens.” The Sportsmans Creek Bridge open day will be held on Saturday February 24 between 9am and 11.30am on the new road approach on the northern side of the new bridge. Mr Gulaptis said a new era of travel across Sportsmans Creek is about to begin as the bridge will better cater to pedestrians and cyclists and meet predicted future demand from vehicles. “The 175 metre concrete crossing will not only keep motorists moving for many years to come, but it will improve safety for road users. “Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists will be moved permanently onto the replacement bridge in the days after this community event. “Minor finishing work including landscaping will continue to be carried out and the community will be kept informed about when the bridge will open to traffic. “Limited parking will be available on the day so Roads and Maritime Services is offering a free shuttle bus service to pick up and drop off residents in Lawrence who would like to attend the event. “A bus will also be available from Maclean for those who register their interest. More detail is available on Roads and Maritime’s website about the service,” Mr Gulaptis said. Pedestrians will be able to access the event from the road next to the community hall. Motorists and pedestrians should follow the direction of signs and staff on the day.
