Kayakers enjoy ‘Hell on Water’ during helicopter fundraiser

cvi   Sixteen kayakers have completed a paddle from Grafton to Iluka to raise funds for the northern region’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Dubbed ‘Hell on Water’, with a nod towards the rescue helicopter’s Hell on Wheels cycle tour fundraiser, which is due to be held from October 8 to 15 this year, the kayakers spent four days on the Clarence River, starting last Thursday and finishing on Sunday. Maclean Outdoors proprietor, Tony Keogh, organised the event. “We paddled daily distances of up to 20 kilometres,” he said. The paddlers stopped overnight at Ulmarra, Lawrence and Harwood and conducted fundraising raffles at the Ulmarra Hotel, Lawrence Tavern, Harwood Hotel and Sedgers Reef Hotel in Iluka. “Highlights of the paddling were the pelicans and black swans on the Broadwater and dolphin encounters on days three and four,” Mr Keogh said. “We had a great group of people committed to fundraising for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and had a great time doing it. “Planning is already under way for the event in 2017.”
