The final of the Weekend Match Play was conducted on Saturday, and with Heather Purtill off 11 up against Janette Blair off 12, it was poised as a very even contest. The match commenced on the 10th tee and with both competitors playing to par or bogie on each hole it was game on. Janette held the lead at the turn, 1 up over Heather. With a squared result on the next two holes, and a win on the 3rd, Janette was then able to extend her lead to 2 up. Heather had a great win on the 4th to bring it back to 1 down for her. However, it appeared that disaster had struck for Heather on the 6th when she put her second shot through the green. With Janette sitting on the green for two, Heather dug deep to chip back on and sunk her putt for a bogie four. Janette then two putted for a squared hole. A squared result on the 7th and a good win to Heather on the 8th saw the match all square to head up the 9th for the final hole. Both players got their drives away, and with both slamming their second shots up the par 5 fairway to within strikingdistance, it was going down to the wire. However, with Heather chipping in for what appeared to be a nice close shot to the pin and Janette, disappointingly putting her third shot into the greenside bunker, the hearts were pounding once again. The players arrived at the green, to get the word from the spectators that Heather’s ball was in fact in the hole for a brilliant eagle. Game over! Hugs and congratulations were exchanged, but the comment of the day was reserved for one of our stalwarts of the game, Jeannie, who declared that Janette had been sh** on by an eagle. Congratulations to Heather as the winner and to Janette as the r/up for a most entertaining and good spirited match. Thanks also to president Heather for umpiring the match at short notice.
