GDSC swimmers “holidays & sickies”

Attendance for competition was once again affected by members still enjoying their holiday breaks and also several on the sick or injured list.

Despite the low numbers, competition was able to go ahead due to the fact that Terry Barnes, Jill Enks and her grandson James took over the very important rolls of timekeeping.

Richard Sear, Yvonne Shorrock and Gary Dixon were the only starters for the 50m final. Doug Ensbey had qualified but declined to swim in the final due to still taking things easy after heart problems.

Yvonne, having her first swim in many weeks always seems to know exactly how to perform in the fifty-metre event and didn’t disappoint on the night – coming home first with a great time. Richard was next home and Gary, still recovering from his 50km ride earlier in the day was placed third.

Terry Marsh, David Moon and Doug Ensbey were in the final of the 25m freestyle.

Doug took to the water first on handicap and looked quite puzzled when only having covered half the distance was being overtaken by the other two swimmers.

It was then that he realised he was breast stroking instead of doing freestyle, the result being that David scooped first place, Terry second and a good five or six seconds further back came Doug.

In the final of the 25m butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke event it was Sharon Welch, Gary Dixon and David Moon awaiting the starters signal.

Even though David was the back marker he made up ground very quickly and snatched the win with a fantastic time recorded. Sharon and Gary were placed second and third respectively and I am sure that their slow times were due to their cycling adventures earlier in the day.
