GDSC swimmers back for competition

Tuesday January 2

Richard Sear has won the Jake Kroehnert/Ray White Real Estate explosive cup for January 2024. With the excellent time of 19.31 seconds off a nominated 20 seconds, Richard showed good form over 25 metres to narrowly defeat David Moon and Toni Ensbey.

Our club members would like to send their sympathy to the Simkus family on the passing of Anne’s much-loved father, Ron.

Members were very happy to welcome back Ian Davis for the swim. They also welcomed Toni’s cousin Jill who came along to cheer on our swimmers.

Ian made the final of the 50 metres freestyle race, together with John Wainwright and Lorri Griffiths. Lorri came in first, and with the great time of 70.16 off a nominated 71 seconds, she was very excited to be named the winner. John was second and Ian was third.

Lorri also reached the breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly final, together with Sharon Lentfer and Terry Marsh. You would think Lorri would be very tired after winning the 50 metres race, but no, she really put the speed on and was disqualified! Sharon, the first swimmer to touch, also received a D. Terry was therefore the happy winner.

The AIF carnival will held at Southport this year, on Saturday March 23. Members, please consider nominating and representing our club. Entries close on February 24.

Tuesday December 19

Well, he’s done it again! For the second week in a row, Adam Pearce has won the final of the breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly race. This meant that he took home the Wykes Tyrepower cup for December. Congratulations, Adam.

Congratulations must also go to Jenny Vickery, who reached all three finals – a rare achievement, especially for our lady swimmers.

Jenny’s grandchildren Hannah and Mason Vickery joined her for the swim, and it was good to see them compete in both 25 metre races.

In the 50 metres freestyle final, the competitors were Jenny, Lorri Griffiths, Tora Sear and her father Michael, and David Moon. First to arrive at the wall was the speedy Jenny who was promptly disqualified. Tora swam into first place, with a time of 52.16 off a nominated 53 seconds, but as a junior she is not eligible for a prize. Michael took the prize voucher, with Moony second and Lorri third.

There was Jenny again in the final of the 25 metres freestyle, together with Lorri, Michael, Moony and young Myles Pearce (a chip off the old block?).  The winner was Moony, with Jenny second and Michael third.

To wrap up the night, and the year, the Wykes cup contest for the specialty strokes was held. The finalists were Jenny (of course!) Sharon Lentfer, Terry Marsh, Adam Pearce and Tora Sear. When the handicapping calculations were made, it was Adam who was the winner, closely followed by Jenny in second place and Sharon who took third place.

The club owes a big thanks to Max Kroehnert who comes along every week to help with timekeeping. Max is always cheerful and extremely accurate with his timing.
