Fashions on the Field celebrations for Yamba lady bowlers

There was a touch of Flemington when lady bowlers swapped their bowls attire for racing finery and celebrated the Oaks Day with all the fun of a race day – and followed up with a delicious lunch.

To fill in the hours before the big race there were a couple of “bookies” running sweeps (thanks Wendy and Kaye) and to Lucy Coulter for putting the tickets together for us.

The carpets were rolled out for some very challenging games of carpet bowls – the competition was fierce, but it was Gloria Davis, Joan Scadden, Bev Shatte and Sue Lindsay who took out the bowls prizes.

All the ladies looked very glamorous in their finery, but the winners of Fashions on the Field were Chris Cole, Marj Thompson and Lyn McLean – rewarded with wine and chocolates for the sheer elegance of their respective outfits.

Appetites were sharpened by the morning’s activities, and it was on to the beautifully decorated tables to enjoy a delicious repast from Mark and his kitchen team. Thanks again to Julie Coulter and her team of Marion and Jude for their efforts in this department.

There was a lot of encouraging whoops as the horses finally took to the field for The Oaks and a lot of lucky ladies who collected their sweep winnings.

All of this was followed by the drawing of the raffles (kindly donated by members) and as usual – the lovely Debbie May flowers. One particular lady really cleaned up with no less than three raffle wins and two sweep winners.

What a lovely day – a bit of a change from our usual Thursday bowls but it’s back to ground level again next week with mixed on Tuesday and of course – our No 3 Pennants with their noses to the grindstone in preparation for the looming playoffs.

And happy to announce our Bowler of The Month for October is none other than Julie Coulter. Not only a tidy bowler, but Julie also gives her all to the Club and is a very deserving winner.

Reminders for mixed Pennant presentation – 5pm Sunday November 13 (mufti) and don’t forget your entry for the Shirley Drum Triples on Tuesday and Thursday December 13 &15 (pay at the cash box). Also, items for the Christmas hamper gratefully received in readiness for our bowls windup on December 15.

The major raffle will also be drawn on this day – so get those tickets sold and return your books ASAP.
