Educating future leaders in the Clarence Valley

Emma Pritchard

Welcome to the Clarence Valley Independent’s special back to school feature for 2024.

As the front gates of local schools throughout the region prepare to open once again, staff are organising their curriculums for the next 12-month period, students are busy purchasing new books, uniforms, and equipment, and looking forward to catching up with their friends, and parents, especially those with children starting kindergarten this year, are readying themselves and their sons and daughters for exciting new experiences.

In the Clarence Valley, we are fortunate to have an incredible selection of widely respected and highly valued educational facilities which are dedicated to offering students outstanding learning opportunities in supportive, encouraging, and open environments while nurturing, developing, and strengthening their thirst for knowledge as they continually strive to achieve academic excellence in the classroom and beyond.

A comprehensive range of programs which focus on individuality and creativity are also provided locally, along with additional support networks which expertly guide students as they explore innovative pathways in their education and growth and establish a lifelong desire to learn as they take the next steps towards becoming future leaders and prominent members of our community while making positive contributions along the way.

Student welfare and well-being remain top priorities at all Clarence Valley schools.

Staff are professionally trained to assist students across a broad range of subjects and help prepare them for life outside of the school grounds.

Clarence Valley students are also renowned for being high achievers who actively pursue successful careers in their respective industries, including music, sport, politics, and education.

As 2024 progresses, the Clarence Valley Independent is looking forward to sharing the achievements of our local students with our readers and celebrate the next generation of eminent persons as they continue to inspire us.

Local students on the move

Two local Southern Cross students will commence an extended study experience in Fiji and South Korea in 2024, thanks to the Federal Government’s New Colombo Plan scholarship.

Bachelor of Science (Applied Chemistry) student Caylin Nel from Coffs Harbour will head to Fiji in September next year. Caylin is not only an academic star with an HD average, but she is also a passionate swimmer and diver who plans to use her time abroad in marine science research and an internship.

Nevenya Cameron is a Bachelor of Laws and Creative Writing student based in Lismore who plans to study and undertake a law internship in South Korea as well as study French in New Caledonia. COVID put a stop to her on-campus study plans, but she became actively involved in creative community events.

“I’m interested in the ongoing implications of the colonisation Korea has faced over time and the human rights issues in North Korea and I’d eventually like to pursue a career in international relations and diplomacy,” she said.

The New Colombo Plan scholarship is funded by the Federal government and supports Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the Indo-Pacific region, encouraging cultural and knowledge exchange between the region and Australia.

Southern Cross University Director, Global Engagement Christine Martin said the New Colombo Plan scholarships were a fantastic opportunity for students.

“The scholarships are very competitive, and it speaks to the calibre of our students that three have been awarded this year,” she said.

Nurturing Student Wellbeing: A Holistic Approach at Clarence Valley Anglican School

At Clarence Valley Anglican School, the well-being of our students is a top priority. With a steadfast commitment to providing a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for students from Pre-K to 12, we have introduced an array of programs and resources designed to foster their emotional, social, and mental well-being. Our holistic approach to student well-being not only ensures they flourish academically but also grow into confident, resilient individuals.

The cornerstone of our well-being support system is the Wellbeing Hub, a dedicated space where students can seek guidance, support, and a listening ear. But the heart of our well-being initiatives has a furry, four-legged member – Winnie, the Wellbeing dog. Winnie provides comfort and companionship, helping reduce stress and anxiety among students.

We believe that well-being is not one-size-fits-all. That’s why we offer Open Parachute, a universal program tailored to students of all ages, promoting mental health awareness and resilience. Additionally, targeted programs like Rock and Water, Seasons for Growth, Art for Wellbeing, and Drumbeat offer specialised support, equipping students with valuable life skills and emotional intelligence.

Our dedicated well-being team, including a counsellor, school chaplain, and Coordinators, are always there for our students. They provide guidance, empathy, and support, helping students navigate the challenges of adolescence. At Clarence Valley Anglican School, we’re more than just a school; we’re a community with a big heart.

In a world where students face increasing pressure and uncertainties, Clarence Valley Anglican School stands as a beacon of well-being support, ensuring our students have the tools they need to thrive, both academically and emotionally. We are committed to nurturing not just the minds but also the hearts of our students, empowering them to conquer life’s challenges with grace and resilience.

Local college helps kerb youth outmigration

Every year many young people are forced to leave communities in search of suitable careers – ‘youth outmigration’. A local non-profit training organisation, North Coast Community College is aware of the impact of losing people needed to sustain our communities and provides courses aligned with local career opportunities.

NCCC’s CEO, Ted Nabung, recognises the need for continuous effort in nurturing personal and professional growth for building individual vocations.

‘Since 1981, NCCC is committed to providing education and skills training – it increases the chances for everyone here to live, work and thrive in the Northern Rivers,’ Nabung said.

But he’s also aware that there are major factors influencing regional areas, amid extreme weather events and natural disasters.

‘The challenges are before us but we’re grateful for the relatively ordinary 2023, which gave the community a chance to re-connect and NCCC to do what it does best – training people up,” Nabung added.

In the heart of our vibrant Clarence Valley community, a beacon of education has been steadily growing and evolving – Clarence Valley Anglican School (CVAS). As we reflect on the remarkable journey our school has undertaken, it becomes apparent that it is not merely a centre for academic excellence but a nurturing ground for holistic development, focusing on both the intellect and the wellbeing of its students.

Over the past few years, CVAS has experienced significant growth, not only in terms of physical infrastructure but, more importantly, in its commitment to fostering an environment where every student can flourish academically, emotionally, and socially. The expansion of our school facilities is a testament to the increasing demand for quality education in our community. The new Performance Centre, Wellbeing Hub, and new classrooms as well as enhanced recreational spaces are not just structures but symbols of our dedication to providing the best possible learning environment for our students.

One of the most commendable aspects of CVAS’s growth is its unwavering focus on student wellbeing. Recognising that academic success is just one facet of a student’s journey, the school has implemented a range of initiatives to support the emotional and mental health of its students. Counselling services, wellbeing programs, and extracurricular activities that promote physical and mental wellness have become integral parts of our curriculum. The school believes in the philosophy that a happy and healthy student is better equipped to face the challenges of academics and life beyond the classroom.

Academically, CVAS continues to shine. Our students consistently achieve high academic standards, a testament to the dedication of our talented staff and the school’s commitment to providing a challenging yet nurturing academic environment. The curriculum is designed not just to impart knowledge but to instil critical thinking skills, creativity, and a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.

Looking forward, CVAS has ambitious plans for the future. The school aims to further enhance its academic programs, embracing innovative teaching methodologies and integrating cutting-edge technology to prepare students for the challenges of the modern world. Plans for collaboration with local businesses and community organisations are underway to provide students with real-world experiences and opportunities for practical application of their knowledge.

Additionally, CVAS is committed to expanding its community outreach initiatives, fostering stronger ties with parents, local businesses, and community leaders. The school believes that a collaborative approach is essential for the holistic development of our students and the betterment of our community.

As we celebrate the growth and success of Clarence Valley Anglican School, let us also acknowledge the collective efforts of the dedicated educators, supportive parents, and eager students who make this institution a beacon of excellence. Together, we look forward to a future where CVAS continues to be a nurturing space for academic achievement, personal growth, and community engagement.
