A swimming Christmas for everyone associated with GDSC. Image: GSC

Christmas with GDSC Swimming Club

All swimmers last week were very keen to get the programme done and dusted early because the annual Christmas get-together was being held afterwards.

On the blocks for the 50m event were Lorri Griffiths, Geoff Simkus, John Wainwright, Jenny Vickery and Steve Donnelly.

With the handicaps ranging from two through to thirty-eight it was difficult to guess who was in with a chance until three quarters of the race had been completed.

Lorri blitzed the field, coming home at least two seconds ahead of the opposition but unfortunately for her, the timekeeper had her as breaking by almost three seconds. Jenny was next home but once again the timekeeper had her breaking by two seconds.

John was the next one home and was relieved to learn that his time was perfect and scored him the win with Steve scooping up second place and Geoff taking third.

The Jake Kroehnert Ray White Explosive Cup was hotly contested in the 25m sprint.

Vying for the win were Anne Simkus, Damien O’Mahony, David Moon, Sharon Welch and Toni Ensbey.

By the time all swimmers had dived into the water the pool was absolutely awash and the finish was a judge’s nightmare.

Damien was awarded the win coming home just .09 ahead of David who took second place and Anne was happy with her time and third placing.

Lorri Griffiths lined up for her second final of the night when the finalists were announced for the 25m breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly event.

Taking their place beside her were Natalie Durrington, Sharon Welch, David Moon and Damien O’Mahony.

Once again Lorri was just too speedy, breaking by two seconds. David was also disqualified, recording a very slight break of .06.

Damien was awarded the win with Nat taking second place and Sharon third.

Afterwards everyone gathered at the GDSC for an absolutely delicious barbeque and the children were very excited when Santa arrived with a small gift for each of them
