Champion of Champions at Yamba

The 2015 Clarence River District Bowling Association Champion of Club Champions singles and pairs finals were played over the weekend at the Brooms Head Bowling Club. On Saturday, the Yamba Singles Club Champion, Martyn Wood, was drawn against the Club Champion from the Grafton District Services Club, Mark Walsh, in what was viewed as a battle between the new boys on the block. Martyn went on to record a solid win and booked a place in the final against the district’s form bowler, Don Plummer of Maclean. Don had previously defeated Ken Evans of South Grafton in his semi-final and was looking to add the District Champion of Club Champion singles title to his growing list of 2015 achievements, which already includes the Zone 1 Open Singles Champion. In a very entertaining final Don Plummer overcame a valiant Martyn Wood 31 shots to 17. Although defeated, Martyn represented the Yamba Bowling and Recreation Club with esteem and should be very proud of his achievements so far this year. The Champion of Club Champion pair’s finals were contested on Sunday. The Yamba pair of Allan Parker and Alan Abbott faced the unenviable task of taking on the Maclean duo of the irrepressible Jim Johnson and the man of the moment, Don Plummer. The two Allan’s have been in good form lately and entered the match confident of a good showing. However, as good as the Yamba pair bowled the Maclean combination found ways to combat any challenge and went on to record a resounding 28 shot to 13 victory. Allan Parker and Alan Abbott will now focus on the State Finals of the Open Pairs to be held at Ettalong in late October. Back at club championship level, the semi-finals and final of the 2015 Major/Minor Pairs Championship will be played on Saturday 29th August with games commencing at 9.00am and 1.00pm respectively. The first semi-final will see Don Freeman and Bruce Angel taking on the form pairing of Jeff Cook and Alan Turnbull, who have left a trail of destruction behind them as they have powered past several well credentialed teams on their way to the semi-finals. The second semi-final will see the combination of Allan Marr and Ray Schafer taking on the winners of the postponed quarter-final between the dominant union of Erik Pedder and Mark Scobie against the experienced union of Ron Moore and Steve Kliendienst. This quarter-final will be played on Friday afternoon, 28th August, during the normal men’s Friday afternoon social bowls.
