Blue Pacific Pairs to South Grafton
Twenty-four teams from throughout the Clarence Valley District and beyond gathered at Yamba Bowling Club on Monday 10th August for the annual Blue Pacific Fours Tournament, generously sponsored by Yamba Bowling Club, Sea Numbers Accountancy, and McDonald’s Yamba.
In a close fought competition, Ella Whitford’s South Grafton team emerged victorious.
Skip Ella, Third Iris Heppel , Second Noel Graham and Lead Phyllis Knox chalked up three good wins to take out the prize-money on shots difference, holding out strong competition from the second-placed Maclean team skipped by Sandra Ferro.
Ella finished on 6 points, +33 While Sandra, Cheryl Johnson (Lead), Sally Squires (Second) and Judy Parkes (Third) also finished on 6 points, but with +24.
Another Maclean team of Joyce Cotton, Coral Shannon, Carolyn Byrom and Val Daniels finished third with 4 points and +23, while fourth place went to the Yamba team of Maria Sakac, A Cook, Robyn McPherson and Marjorie Thompson, also on 4 points but with +16. A further 6 teams also won two of their three games.
Among the 24 teams entered, there were some terrific games played with close results in some cases. It was wonderful to see the camaraderie between players who travelled from throughout the Clarence District as well as from Evans Head, Park Beach and Lismore City. In addition a number of the many visiting players wintering in our area and playing with the locals, joined teams, adding to the fun and friendship of the day.
Three lucky teams emerged as having the most sizable wins in each round, and in the first they were G Marczan, C Holder, M Swanson, A Peel (+9) from Evans Head; in the second round, it was a composite team of E Amey, R Arthur, K Becker (all from Iluka) and E Turnbull from Lismore City (+9) and winners in the third round with +19 went to the South Grafton team of B Ford, M Andrew, A Bunn and C Nixon. It was good to see some of the out of District players among the winners.
The major raffle prize of a wonderful barbeque, was won by Wendy Peachey of Iluka.
The day was a big success thanks to all the players entering, officials, the workers for all their efforts, the caterers and the green keepers, and of course to the aforementioned generous sponsors.
