The Jacaranda Festival committee are seeking sponsorship from Clarence Valley businesses to set the wheels in motion for this year’s inaugural Billy Cart Derby. Without this sponsorship unfortunately the Billy Cart Derby will not be able to go ahead. Rural communities like Bangalow, Kyogle, Beaudesert and Maclean are starting to get behind the re-emergence of what was once an iconic part of Australian history. A spark has been ignited within the hearts and memories of the baby boomers as they rediscover their childhood passion, heading to the shed to create their state of the art machine. This is no longer a solo journey, however. They have a family now, who are eager to get involved and have a go. Gone are the days of the wooden fruit crate with pram wheels – this is serious business. Expectations are running high and the pressure is on to create the best and fastest billy cart. At a time where technology has consumed the younger generation, the re-emergence of the billy cart has captured the interest of “Google Generation” and drawn them away from the computer and into the garage – building not only a billy cart, but a deeper family relationship. The competitive spirit is reborn: neighbour versus neighbour, club versus club and business versus business, for the new coveted title of Jacaranda Festival – Billy Cart Derby, ‘King of the Mountain’.
