Athletic Success
Maclean High School student Rhiannah Woods recently returned from the NSW Combined High Schools Athletic Championships, where she threw a personal best 11.23 metres (previously 10.97) to win the bronze medal in the 14 years age group.
When asked what she put her success down to, she answered: “Tom!” Woods said she would continue to “train hard next year and improve” enough to compete at state level in the three throws events: shot put, javelin and discuss. The winning throw at the championships was 12.36, second was 11.43.
Trainer Tom Hancock (at right training para-athlete James Bertalli) said Woods was the first of his many 14-year-old athletes to throw 11 metres. “Rhiannah is showing signs of being a good all round thrower,” Hancock said. “I expect her to throw 12 metres next year.”
