Annual Yamba charity walk raises over $20,000 for Cystic Fibrosis research

The annual 23-kilometre charity walk from Brooms Head to Yamba Bowlo Sports & Leisure raised $20,180 for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) research and support.

Coordinated by leading local real estate firm Raine & Horne Maclean, Yamba, Iluka, the event held on August 4 attracted 280 Participants.

Since its inception in 2008, the annual 23 km walk has seen thousands of participants raise over $110,000.

According to Mr Brandon Bourke, Managing Director of Raine & Horne Maclean, Yamba, Iluka, participants can choose to walk the 23-kilometre route or spend a fun-filled day at the Bowlo Sports & Leisure Yamba who partnered with us to support this fantastic event.

“Activities at the club included barefoot bowls, croquet, live music, raffles, a complimentary lunch, and drinks, all of which support a charity dedicated to helping children “breathe easier,” he added.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) primarily affects the lungs and digestive system because of a malfunction in the exocrine system, which is responsible for producing saliva, sweat, tears, and mucus. CF is the most common, life-limiting genetic condition affecting Australians. Over 3,730 people are living with CF in Australia, and 1 in 25 people carry the recessive CF gene change.

Mr Bourke stated, “Community and charity is part of our business’s DNA” and “our team found a deep connection to Cystic Fibrosis due to seeing a number of local families struggling with this terrible affliction.

“To witness a child with breathing difficulties, and the trauma of serious surgery like double lung transplants, compelled our team to help.”

This year’s event ambassador was 14-year-old Chloe Edwards, an inspirational local girl living with CF. Since 2012, Chloe’s family has raised separately to this event over $40,000 for CF.

“We are incredibly proud of the local community’s ongoing support and participation and that Chloe was able to play such an essential part in the event,” said Mr Bourke.

“This event not only raises crucial funds for CF research but also brings our community together for a day of fun and solidarity. It’s heartwarming to see how much has been achieved since we launched this event 16 years ago.”
