Australian Red Cross project officer Patrick O’Meley is encouraging Clarence Valley residents to attend a volunteer information seminar next week.

“The event will shine a light on what Red Cross Emergency Services do and how someone can get involved and assist in times of need,” he said. “We will also have some local volunteer team members attending to answer any questions about firsthand experiences they have had. “Being involved with the Australian Red Cross is a real eye-opening experience and we’re encouraging residents to attend and learn how they can get involved and help out when an emergency occurs within their local community.”

Mr. O’Meley said the Australian Red Cross is focusing on holding volunteer information seminars in locations that have recently been affected by natural disasters. Following the devastating bush fires, drought, and recent flooding throughout large parts of the state, Mr. O’Meley said it is important communities are equipped with the necessary skills to respond appropriately, and there is a wide range of roles that assist before, during, and after a natural disaster occurs in preparedness, during the event and the ongoing recovery.

“The Clarence Valley has, unfortunately, seen some absolutely dreadful and life-threatening events within the past two years and by hosting our information seminar, we aim to educate locals on how they can best respond and utilise their individual assets and skills,” he said.

The volunteer information seminar will be held at the Grafton District Services Club on June 1. The event starts at 10 am and is expected to run for two hours.
