Lawrence legend, Doug ‘Dougie’ Lewis passed-away on 7 May 2020, at the age of 103.
Mr Lewis celebrated his 103rd birthday at the Lawrence Tavern in December last year www.clarencevalleynews.com.au/doug-turns-103-and-still-driving.
‘Dougie’, who was a regular at the Lawrence Tavern for around 20 years, amazed the locals, still holding a driver’s licence at the age of 103 and he was driving up until the day before he passed-away.
Mr Lewis’s niece Di Donovan said that due to the COVID-19 lockdown, many of his friends may not have heard that their friend had sadly passed-away.
“In his usual way, he didn’t want fuss, or a funeral,” Ms Donovan said.
“He surpassed his great-grandmother Mary Peard, who was born in 1836 in Cornwall, England.
“Mary arrived in South Australia on 4 December 1855 and lived to be 102 and 2 months. Her great-grandson, Dougie surpassed this milestone, living to 103 years and 4 months.
“He was a lovely man and I was very proud of my Uncle Doug,” she said.
