The 8th annual NRMA/See Breeze Primary Schools Tennis championships were held last week at the Ryan Park Tennis Complex in Maclean. Event organiser, local coach Alan Jurd thanked NRMA/See Breeze for their ongoing support for what is turning out to be a highly competitive event with a high standard of play. A record 10 local primary schools nominated for the event with the Cowper “Crushers” entering their first team ever. “When the event first started there was only 1 or 2 teams that could win it. This year 6 of the 10 teams were all in with a chance, which makes for some incredible tennis played this week,” said Mr Jurd. The last years has seen three different teams take the trophy and this year the Yamba “Yams” have taken out their first big win in the comp, defeating four times runners up Gulmarrad. All are confident that Gulmarrad will have their day in the sun soon. Alan Jurd noted that the sportsmanship and behaviour of all players was first class, and all players represented their schools admirably and are really looking forward to next year’s event. Final standings for this year were: 1. Yamba; 2. Gulmarrad; 3. Harwood; 4. St Josephs; 5. Maclean; 6. Cowper; 7. St James; 8. Iluka; 9. Pacific Valley; 10. Palmers Island.
