Yamba Nippers surf carnival

Yamba Surf Club staged a very successful Nippers Surf Carnival on Sunday November 5 at Main Beach with over 500 nippers from 10 clubs stretching from Sawtell in the south to Cudgen Headland in the north, taking part.

Surf conditions were ideal for the Nippers with a one metre swell and south- east breeze. However light rain set in around 1pm and forced the carnival to finish early with a number of beach events not run.

A big thank you is due to the Maclean Pipe Band who turned up in numbers to play for the March Past event, always a great spectacle.

Each of the 85 participating Yamba Nippers gave it their best shot on the day with many competing in their first ever surf carnival.

Cudgen Headland took out the overall club pointscore with 399 points from Yamba in 2nd place on 283 and Byron Bay 3rd on 210 points.

Yamba members competed particularly well in the water events with 11 firsts, 13 seconds and 14 third placings.

Those to win individual events were, Cody Kratzmann U9 Surf and Board Races; Hazel Rowney U10 Surf Race; Ziggy O’Brien U11 Surf and Board Races; Clarry Dougherty U11 Iron Man; and Felix Forbes U13 Surf, Board and Iron Man.

In teams events Yamba’s two winners were the U13 Beach Relay team of Kayla Hancock, Indi Gell, Kydan Jones and Felix Forbes; and the U8 Wade Relay team of Nav Robinson, Archie Douglas, Noah Nixon and Lenny Dougherty.

As always, these events cannot run without the enthusiastic support of our parent helpers and our generous sponsors.

Yamba Nipper competitors are now looking forward to the next carnival, the Far North Coast Branch Titles, to be held at Byron Bay on December 9 and 10.
