Yamba Men’s Bowls: COVID chaos

The state-wide COVID lockdown has thrown the club’s bowls program into a state of temporary disarray with no championships, social bowls or even roll-ups possible during this period.

At this stage we are working around a seven-day lockdown period, but as we all know this too relies upon many variables including community support.

The Mixed Pairs Championship that was scheduled to commence on Sunday was the first casualty. The current plan is to push the event back so that rounds one and two will now, hopefully, be played Saturday August 28 with the quarter and semi-finals on Sunday August 29. A date for the final is yet to be determined.

The 2021 club Minor Pairs Championship is at the semi-finals stage and subject to the lockdown concluding next Saturday, the semi-finals and final will be played on Sunday August 22 at 9am and 1pm respectively.

The semi-finals will feature Keith Smith and Len Yeomans up against Rod Berry and Peter Retallack; while the second will highlight the skills of Bob and Chris Gunning doing battle against Jack Atherton and Paul Conley. If the lockdown is extended, then a new schedule will be advised once confirmed.

The club, at this stage, still proposes to host Father’s Day mixed social bowls on Sunday September 5 commencing at 1pm. All members, visitor’s and families are welcome to participate in this activity and no green fees will be charged on this auspicious occasion. The nomination sheet will be placed on the bowls bench as soon as the club reopens. However, nominations can also be made by telephoning the bowls office on 6646 8669 and recording your intentions on the answering machine.

All social bowls at the club, as previously stated, are on hold. However, as soon as the lockdown restrictions are lifted or modified to allow lawn bowls, they will be reinstated with men’s social bowls on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. All games commence at 1pm and nominations can be made by telephoning the bowls office on 6646 8669 or by recording participation details on the nomination sheet adjacent the bowls office prior to 11.30am on the intended day of play.

Please do the right thing, stay safe and we will all be back on the greens in the near future.
