Yamba CAN asks and our Council can do it!

Ed,

Yamba Community Action Network requests our Council to place Weekly Council News in the Clarence Valley Independent (CVI 19/4/23) and our Council can do it. Or could do it, if it wanted to.

And I for one would like more information from our Council about possible adverse affects on water drainage around the Carrs Road roundabout and the surrounding area in the long-term.

Is it possible to continue to dump a truck load of fill every 10 minutes on the Clarence Valley flood plain of the West Yamba Urban Release Area (WYURA) without any future adverse effects?

I thank Deputy Mayor Greg Clancy for putting forward a well-reasoned notice of motion to the April Clarence Valley Council concerning the rezoning of floodplain land in the WYURA.

Until governments decide to try to adequately address climate emergencies such as extreme floods and bushfires, these climate emergencies will continue to be more severe and will occur more frequently in the future, in the future of generations of children as yet unborn.

Well at least the penny has dropped about climate emergencies in Wales with the appointment in Wales of Sophie Howe who was the world’s first Minister for Future Generations.

Sophie Howe is now visiting Australia and I’d just love to hear Ms Howe’s thoughts on the idea of new housing developments on floodplains in today’s rapidly changing climate.

Harry Johnson, Iluka
