The public are invited to attend this years Port of Yamba Historical Society Australia Day ceremony featuring guest speaker is Maya Johnson. Maya is a Year 12 student at Maclean High School. She is studying Advanced English and has been involved with public speaking for a few years. In 2019 she won both the Rotary Public Speaking competition, and the Lions Club Youth of the Year Public Speaking section.
Many locals will know Maya from her years of competition dancing, across all genres. Yet for this Australia Day event, her strong interest in politics both nationally and internationally, and the impact on Australia of climate change, has motivated her to prepare a special address for the Historical Society. Media discussion about the recent devastation by bushfires has alerted her to “the role of politicians…what they have to do to respond to a such an horrific event … it’s been so massive that we all need to consider the cause and effect.”
