Road closures for Yamba Triathlon

Triathletes from around Australia will descend on Yamba next month for the annual Yamba Triathlon on November 18 and 19.

Part of the North Coast Triathlon League Interclub Series, the popular event will see athletes both young and old compete in a 750-metre swim at Whiting Beach, followed by a 20km cycle from Whiting Beach along Angourie Road and back, and a 5km run starting on the breakwall.

Individuals and teams aged from seven years and up are encouraged to register for the weekend’s events, with a fun run and ocean swim held on Saturday, and the “sprint” length Triathlon on Sunday.

Morgan Williams of NX Sports Community Foundation apologised to locals for the inconvenience as six local roads and carparks will be closed during both days of the event.

“To deliver a safe and secure event for participants and spectators, there will be impacts to roads and changed traffic conditions,” he said.

“We understand that events such as the Yamba Triathlon can alter the regular flow of traffic and every effort is being made to consider individual circumstances and minimise inconvenience.”

Roads and thoroughfares that will be impacted by full closure, shared pathway, or shared road conditions during the weekend are Whiting Beach carpark, Yamba breakwall, Harbour Street, River Street, Wooli Street, and Angourie Road.

Mr Williams said for the Triathlon to run smoothly, local volunteers are needed to help and community groups, schools, local sporting clubs, or any locals willing to lend a hand will be paid for their four-to-five-hour shift, with a group of five paid $350, and up to $1350 for a group of more than 21.
