National Reconciliation Week and Close The Gap Day

Community members, councillors and staff met with Yaegl elders at a Reconciliation Morning Tea at Botero in Maclean as part of National Reconciliation Week (pictured).

The start and end dates to National Reconciliation Week, 27 May and 3 June, commemorate the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision respectively – two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey.

This year’s theme is Be A Voice for Generations – encouraging all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways where we live, work and socialise.

Clarence Valley Close The Gap Day is Thursday June 8. An event will be held from 10am to 2pm at Ngayundi Sports Complex Yamba, with yarning circles, stalls, activities, music and entertainment.

• Free shirts will be available for participating school students. Other items including shirts, hoodies, shorts, lanyards and singlets will be available to purchase on the day.

• NRL stars will be in attendance.

The purpose of the day is to educate and create awareness of the Close The Gap program to all youth, encompassing aspects of health, education, employment, justice and culture.
