A man has died following a single-vehicle-crash at Maclean last Friday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to River Street, Maclean, just after 2.30pm on Friday, July 28, following reports a car had crashed into an embankment near the Waterview Motel.

When two NSW Ambulances, plus two NSW Ambulance vehicles and three Coffs Clarence Police District vehicles arrived at the scene, they found a Honda hatchback driven by an 85-year-old woman had been involved in crash.

“The 91-year-old male passenger of the vehicle was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Lismore Base Hospital where he died,” police said in a statement.
“The 85-year-old female driver was taken to Maclean Hospital to undergo mandatory testing.”

Although the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was at Maclean Hospital at the same time as the crash, the man was taken to Lismore by ambulance, and the helicopter was used to transfer a female patient to Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane.

Initial investigations into the incident indicated the female driver may have suffered a medical episode.

Following the crash, one lane of River Street was closed for some time, and traffic diversions were in place as officers from the Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene.

Tragically, this is the second fatal crash on River Street, Maclean, in the past two months after a local cyclist aged in his 50s was killed following a collision with a bus on June 20.

Police have seized the Honda hatchback for forensic examination and inquiries into the incident are continuing.
