Maclean Foursomes Championship

Saturday Medley Stableford

Despite enough rain to wash out last Thursday’s competition, with further rain on Friday, the course was open and in great condition for a bumper field of ninety-one.

With a sizeable group of guests from Grafton and Yamba and one handicapper Jay Townsend from Sanctuary Cove.

Jay’s prodigious length shortened all the par fives, but the last, to short par fours. Even with some classy iron shots producing four birdies the tricky Maclean greens proved too much for him.

In A Grade Greg Wyllie (Yamba) hit a very solid 40 points to take the day. Just behind him on 38 points were our new grounds person Steve Potter and, in form, Justin Menzies.

In B Grade Jays father Trevor Townsend (Grafton) rolled back the years with 39 points, which was just enough to beat his club mate Chris Wheelahan on c/b.

Derek Bloomfield was just one shot back to take third.

In C Grade young Brock Fitzpatrick took first place, closely followed by Michael Shortt and Bill Rorke.

Ball prizes down to Peter Fitzpatrick on 33pts

Geoffrey Johnson made a welcome return and was immediately in the prizes with a NTP on the 2nd hole

John Phillips (Grafton) hit a lucky one on the 7th.

Steven Potter underlined his excellent score by being very accurate on the par three’s taking two nearest the pin awards on 11th and 17th.

Phil Mcguire was retiring to the bar for his habitual mid round beer, safe in the knowledge that the Thistle prize was in his clutches, with his second shot being just two feet from the hole. He nearly spilled his drink as he saw the approach from a distant member of the group immediately behind him.

He had not bargained for a fizzing hybrid to less than a foot from Milo James which settled comfortably inside Phil’s marker to take the Sanctus Thistle Lager award.

Wednesday Skins

A very respectable field for last Wednesday’s Skins saw a much better quality of scoring than the previous weeks festive frolic.

with three golfers on three Skins, John Hunter had designs on the winners’ circle with four Skins.

But ever the bridesmaid, he had to witness that putting machine Hinchy come in again with five Skins.

He will struggle next week at one o’clock with Skins all round!
