Learner motorcyclist caught doing 200km/h

An 18-year-old man who had held his learner motorcycle licence for less than a month was clocked by police at 200km/h at Waterview Heights, near Grafton this month.

When a Grafton highway patrol vehicle attempted to stop a blue Suzuki motorcycle on the Gwydir Highway, at Waterview Heights, about 5.15pm on Sunday, January 14, police allege the 18-year-old rider accelerated away.

It will be alleged the 18-year-old man reached a speed of 200km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Gwydir Highway during a short police pursuit.

When the rider eventually pulled over and stopped the motorcycle he was arrested by police.

Inquiries by police revealed that the motorcycle had been unregistered since October 2023, and the 18-year-old had only obtained his learner motorcycle licence in late December 2023.

Police also discovered that the motorcycle was not an approved learner bike, and the rider wasn’t displaying his L plates.

The rider was taken to Grafton Police Station where he was charged with police pursuit -drive speed/manner dangerous, driving or riding in a manner/speed dangerous to the public, and exceeding the speed limit by over 45km/h.

He was also issued with infringement notices for riding an unregistered and uninsured motorcycle, being a learner riding a motorcycle not on the approved list, and for not displaying a L plate.

The rider’s licence was confiscated and suspended by police and the numberplate on the Suzuki motorcycle was confiscated for three months.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Grafton Local Court in February.
