Grafton Women’s Match Play this Saturday

Following the welcome 15mm of rain which fell on our course during most of the day on Tuesday of last week, a greater proportion of the 47 starters found the going quite tough in our Stroke event on Wednesday. However, the current queen of the trophy cabinet, Marilyn May Powell managed to retain her good form and posted the overall winning score of the day with 70 nett to very happily receive the trophy donated by Hair Solutions. Our 2016 Champion and Div 2 r/up also conquered the day’s conditions with Jen Townsend (74 c/b) winning Div 1 and Sonya Baker (71) winning Div 2. Sue Petty was the r/up in Div 1 with Jane Wolfe placing 3rd (77 c/b). Shirley Avery (again naughtily playing in the wrong grade) was r/up in Div 2 with 76 and Liz Fisher was 3rd (80 c/b). Fay Shields is very pleased to be reaping a few rewards for her efforts on the course and she placed 1st in Div 3 with 77. Liz Smith was 2nd on a c/b from Sally Beresford on 78 nett. The winner of the Coffee Club Aggregate for the month of July was Sue Petty with a fine 66pts. June Newsome was the very excited and lucky winner of the Henwood’s Hot Bread Shop voucher following a draw of the cards. Jen (29), Sonya (26) and Fay (30) were the best putters on the day. Friday had a good field of 31 starters playing their Stableford event in very mild winter conditions. Mary Atkins had another of her consistent rounds to come in as the winner of Div 1 with 34pts. Noeline Smith was 2nd on 33 followed by Jan Patterson on 32. Fay Shields was the winner of Div 2 with 35 followed by Shirley Grainger and Helen Hopwood both on 34. Jan Patterson was the winner of the NTP on the 6th. Saturday’s perfect winter weather was enjoyed by the 9 ladies who entered the Stableford competition. Despite the course being a little on the heavy side following the drenching storm late Friday afternoon, Kate Thomson had a lovely round, with the exception apparently of the 16th, 17th and 18th holes. Kate’s score included a great birdie on the 10th for a 2/4. She then followed this up with a clever chip in from the bunker on the 9th for a par. Kate took the winner’s cheque with a fine 32 pts ahead of Marianne Mannell on 28. Next Saturday, July 16 will see the qualifying round of the weekend Match Play competition which this year is kindly being sponsored by Janette Blair. Eight players will qualify for the match play event. The subsequent rounds, to be played under normal match play rules and conditions, will be played on Saturday, July 23, July 30 with the final round scheduled to be played on Saturday, August 6. There will be no Grafton ladies competition held on Wednesday next, July 20, as our course is hosting the 2016 Women’s Golf Northern Rivers Tournament on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of that week. Any ladies in our area who have an interest in golf and is not playing in the Tournament are more than welcome to come out and watch some of the golf which we envisage will showcase some exciting and talented competitors. Post entries will be at the discretion of the Women’s Golf Northern Rivers match committee and all enquiries in that regard should be directed to their assistant secretary, Carmel Atkinson.
