Grafton Golf Club – ‘Opening Day’ this Saturday

Although our golf programme is conducted 52 weeks of the year, the formal opening of our 2022 season for men will be held this coming Saturday. Continuing with tradition the event will take the form of a 4-man Ambrose with McLennan Earthmoving continuing their association with the Club with their support of the event.

A feature of the event is the playing condition that each member of Ambrose team must contribute at least 3 drives each and the score card must be marked accordingly. As this event attracts a near capacity field it is advisable that nominations be entered sooner rather than later to secure your preferred tee off time.

Midweek competitions

Both the Tuesday and Thursday men’s competition continue to be strongly supported. For example, just under 100 players contested the joint members and Veteran competitions last Tuesday

The results in both competitions were identical with two players, John Tracey (9) and Brian Baldwin (20) sharing the leading score of 40pts. John eventually named the winner following a lengthy c/b; Ray Chesher (22) was awarded the 2nd r/up on a c/b on 40 from Daniel Blackman (20) and Tim Bartlett (5).

Pro balls went down to those players with 33 points on a c/b in both competitions.

Scoring in the Thursday competition was also tight at the top of the leader board with one point separating the top three players. Leading the 56-man field home was Jack Sheean (16) with 40pts against his name. Following Jack were two players, Steve Houlahan (13) and Karl Studd (19) both with 39 and that was the order they finished in following the c/b.

Pro balls going down to those with 35 or better.

Saturday competitions

Despite the threat of rain, a good field of 89 starters contested the final round of the ‘Lion Month of Golf’ which was a good result considering the possibility of rain.

The conditions did not concern Greg Tozer (16) who put together a great round which resulted in a 42pts score, giving him a cone point margin over the rest of the field. From the 22 players who contested A Grade, Jason Casserly (11) was the best with 38, two points clear of his nearest rival in that grade, Graham Tracey (9) on 36, who had to survive a 5-way c/b to claim the prize. The results in B Grade were extremely tight with five players in that grade all completing their rounds with 38pts. Following a rather tense countback procedure, David Wilks (14) was awarded the win from Ralf Zaffino (15). There was no issue with the results in C Grade with John Martin (20) recording the 2nd best overall score on the day with 41pts to claim the grade win. Two points in arrears to John was Henri Arnold (33) to be awarded the r/up spot.

The Pro pin was won by Simon Loadsman (5). Pro balls going down to those on 34 on a c/b.
