As the early morning light filtered over the eastern horizon, a sizeable crowd gathered in Grafton’s Memorial Park at 6am on April 25 to attend the 2023 Anzac Day Dawn Service.

Describing himself as exceptionally pleased to see so many people come together on one of the most significant days in Australia’s history, Honourable Secretary of the Grafton RSL Sub-branch Denis Benfield officially welcomed everyone who came to pay their respects before handing the microphone to newly elected Member for Clarence Richie Williamson who delivered the prologue.

“Australians all lest we forget those who were so young, and have made us so free,” he said.

“Today is our most sacred day.

“On memorials like this, we touch and see the names of servicemen and servicewomen who gave their lives for the country, and the people they loved.

“Today, let’s listen to them, let us open our hearts, and again, hear their stories and draw upon their inspiration.”

As the Ode of Remembrance was read out, attendees respectfully bowed their heads and turned to face the west, and collectively stood in silent reflection in honour of the thousands of Australians who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their freedom.

Lest we forget.
