Close call on Gwydir Highway

A couple of centimetres was the only difference between a narrow escape and tragedy on the Gwydir Highway last week.

Shortly before 7am on July 27, officers from the Coffs/Clarence Police District attended the scene of a collision between a Mitsubishi Mirage and a rigid tipper truck 10km west of Grafton.

Coffs/Clarence Police District Chief Inspector Joanne Reid said the driver of the Mitsubishi Mirage, a Waterview Heights man, pulled out onto the Gwydir Highway in front of the truck, resulting in both vehicles colliding heavily.

Unable to avoid the impact, the rigid tipper truck ran over the bonnet of the Mitsubishi Mirage, narrowly avoiding the driver.

Despite the heavy collision and extensive damage to the Mitsubishi, Chief Inspector Reid said it was lucky no injuries occurred.

She said the male driver of the Mitsubishi Mirage will be issued with an infringement notice as a result of the collision.
