BCU issues scam alert – Flubot

North Coast bank BCU is urging members to be extra vigilant about a malicious scam called the FluBot.

This scam mostly targets Android users and comes as a text message that appears to be for a missed call, parcel delivery or purchase refund.

How the scam works

Once you click on the link, it directs you to download an app containing malware which can then capture your personal information on your phone, including your banking login information and SMS codes.

It can send text messages to all of your contacts without your knowing, to further spread the virus.

If you have an Apple device, the virus can’t create cloned apps to capture your details, but it can send text messages that may infect your contacts with an Android device.

What to do if you receive a scam message
• Do not click on the link or download the app as directed, even if the linked page looks legitimate.
• If you do accidentally click on a link, please contact us immediately and do not login to your banking or any app containing sensitive information on your device.
