Bentleg Market celebrates 30 years

As Clarence Valley business owner Rob Bentley recalls greeting his first customers in 1993, he admits he never envisioned that moment would set the scene for his professional career for the next 30 years.

A creative, cultural, and colourful space prominently located within the heart of South Grafton’s CBD, Bentleg Market quickly established itself as a popular destination for hobbyists, tourists, and locals, along with visiting and emerging artists.

Specialising in quality art products, supplies, and equipment, and offering an extensive range of services including professional framing, Bentleg Market is an iconic landmark in Skinner Street where the artistic vibe is rich and welcoming.

After arriving from Sydney in the late 1980s with a vision to become a yacht builder, an accident while working as a Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteer painted a different future for Mr Bentley, who quickly recognised the unique business opportunity to provide a reputable service for the local arts community and beyond.

Within close proximity of the Pacific and Gwydir Highways, Grafton City train station, and local bus stops, his decision to open his business on the south side of the Clarence River has proved to be extremely successful.

Describing the past 30 years as “a bit of a journey” while crediting his loyal customers for their ongoing support, Mr Bentley said educating people about the correct art products to use while providing insightful demonstrations and helping them unlock creative ideas is all in a day’s work.

As he celebrates the milestone anniversary while looking to the future, which involves spending more time focusing on his own art projects and writing poetry, he is content to continue being his own boss and sole name on the roster between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.
