Born and raised in Grafton, Isabella Roughley, 12, said nominating as a 2024 Junior Jacaranda candidate was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“I want to be a role model for Clarence Valley youths, and my young Aboriginal family and peers by having a sense of achievement and pride,” she explained.

“I spend a lot of my spare time at Ashley Albert Performing Arts Studio (AAPA) doing dance

rehearsals, and I was motivated to nominate as a Junior Jacaranda candidate after dancing at events during the 2023 Grafton Jacaranda Festival.

“As a 2024 Junior Jacaranda candidate I would like to improve my self-esteem, confidence, and develop my public speaking and social skills, and I would like to learn more about the history of the Grafton Jacaranda Festival and be more involved within the community.

“I feel extremely honoured and excited to be part of the celebrations for the 90th Anniversary of the Grafton Jacaranda Festival, and I cannot wait to celebrate and represent the Jacaranda Festival Committee along with our community and experience what goes on behind the scenes.”

This year, Isabella is looking forward to attending the Jacaranda Ball, and she is also excited to perform at Illuminate Jacaranda, the Venetian Carnival, and during the Westlawn Jacaranda Royal Party Crowning Ceremony on October 26 with AAPA.

Isabella’s two favourite events during the Grafton Jacaranda Festival are the Jacaranda Float Procession and River Dreaming: A Day of Culture.

In her free time, Isabella enjoys cooking, visiting the beach, and going on camping trips with her family and friends.

She attends Clarence Valley Anglican School (CVAS) and is proudly sponsored by Clarence Childhood Services.

Isabella said she would like to be the 2024 Junior Jacaranda Queen if she is crowned this year.
