Whiddon Maclean resident celebrates100

Douglas King turned 100 years old in June becoming a new centenarian. We had the pleasure of celebrating this wonderful milestone with Doug.

Doug was very pleased to receive his letter of well wishes from King Charles & the Queens Consort, Camilla, also letters from the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese just to mention a few.

Doug puts his longevity down to good meals prepared by his mother and grandmother in his early years. Doug celebrated his birthday with his family in a private party of about 40 guests. Doug had a second birthday party at Whiddon Maclean with all his friends and family.

Doug was born at Annandale a western Sydney suburb. Doug was the first child for James and Minnie King and had three younger brothers who have all passed.

Doug attended Croydon Park and Ashfield primary schools in Sydney. When Doug left school, he took up an apprenticeship fitter and turner in his father’s mechanical engineering business. Fabricating circular machines and hosiery machines used in knitting machines for the then use in fabric and clothing. During World War II they manufactured textile, fabric for all soldiers clothing, uniforms and other items. After Doug’s father past, the business was sold.

Doug gained employment with Grasslands Fairfield making agricultural drain lines for irrigation. Doug was also employed by Power Cables Australia making electrical power cables to go under the sea between Sydney and Auckland.

Doug recalls the best day of his life was when he married his wife Elizabeth, and they had two children together Margaret and John. Doug has four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great, great, grandchild. Family has always been important to Doug, and he moved to Burleigh Waters, Queensland to be close to family where he retired.  Doug was retired but he continually completed small projects for his friends and others in a small garage set up at his home. Doug liked playing cricket in his younger years. Doug loves to have a chat and reminisce.
