Masters take to the pool

Calling all swimmers the time has come to get back in the pool!

The start to the season for training will on Saturday September 14 at 7.30am at Yamba pool. The pool is apparently cool, about 23 degrees. If you would like to train in a wet suit, feel free to do so as there are people using them at the moment.

Coach Bobbie Winger will be taking swimmers through a series of stretching exercises on the first Saturday back. You will need to be at the pool 15 minutes earlier to participate and don’t be late!

Clarence River Masters Swim Club is a welcoming group of swimmers aged 18-100 and swim in both Maclean and Yamba pools.

Yamba training is 6-7pm Tuesday and Thursday and 7.30am Saturday morning followed by breakfast of tea/coffee and toast.

Maclean training date will be announced. Training is 6-7pm Monday and Wednesday and 7am Saturday in the 50m pool.

Each training session has fully qualified swim coaches to help you improve, however you swim at your own pace. There is a great emphasis on ‘fun’ and ‘friendship’ within the group.  If you would like to ‘try’ before you ‘buy’ you are able to have three free sessions before you need to join the Club. Turn up at any of the training sessions to meet and greet and participate.

Health benefits of swimming

Swimming is a great workout because you need to move your whole body against the resistance of the water.

Swimming is a good all-round activity because it:

  • keeps your heart rate up but takes some of the impact stress off your body
  • builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness
  • helps maintain a healthy weight, healthy heart and lungs
  • tones muscles and builds strength
  • provides an all-over body workout, as nearly all of your muscles are used during swimming.

Other benefits of swimming

Swimming has many other benefits including:

  • being a relaxing and peaceful form of exercise
  • alleviating stress
  • improving coordination, balance and posture
  • improving flexibility
  • providing good low-impact therapy for some injuries and conditions
  • providing a pleasant way to cool down on a hot day
  • being available in many places – you can swim in swimming pools, beaches, lakes, dams and rivers. Make sure that the environment you choose to swim in is safe
