Tom Morrow has been awarded the prestigious Sassafras Pasta and Pizza Restaurant, Yamba, Bowler of the Month award for July. Tom beat off a strong field of challengers for the award and now comes into consideration for the Bowler of the Year award to be presented at the Club’s Annual Mixed Presentation Dinner to be held at the Club on Thursday 10th December. Rounds two and three (quarter-finals) of the 2015 Major/Minor Pairs Championships were contested on Sunday 16th August. In the morning rounds under threatening skies, the pair of Jim Groom and David Coupland accounted for Greg Forbes and Lance McCarthy 23 shots to 12; Greg Dickman and Bob Ballantyne bowled well to defeat Steve Grodzki and Allan Parker 29 to 11; Bob McKibbin and Peter Forrester had Ron Moore and Steve Kliendienst under some early pressure before Ron and Steve steadied to win 25 to16; Ian Lambert and Richard Skippings were ambushed by Jeff Cook and Alan Turnbull 20 to 12 , Jeff and Alan had caused an upset on Friday by defeating the much fancied combination of Paul Conley and Alan Abbott (22 to 16) in a postponed round one match; and Neville Beck and Barry De Bomford found the consistency of Don Freeman and Bruce Angel difficult to combat and were defeated 28 shots to 11. The quarter-final between the team of Ron Moore and Steve Kliendienst against Erik Pedder and Mark Scobie has been postponed; keep an eye on the notice board for the amended date. However, the remaining three match-ups provided the spectator group with a very entertaining afternoon’s viewing of lawn bowling. In a low scoring game, Jeff Cook and Alan Turnbull continued their crusade through the championship field with a narrow, but deserved, win over the well credentialed pair of John Luchetti and Wayne Curtis 16 shots to 13. Allan Marr and Ray Schafer prevailed over the championship favourites Greg Dickman and Bob Ballantyne 21 to 17 in a game where the winner could not be assured until the final end. Don Freeman and Bruce Angel triumphed over Jim Groom and David Coupland 23 to 15 to move into the semi-finals. The semi-finals and final will be played on Saturday 29th August with games commencing at 9.00am and 1.00pm respectively.
